Last month, people from all over the globe celebrated Yuri Gagarin's 50th anniversary as the first human into space by throwing events during what has been known as "Yuri's Night." Yuri's Night Live helped the partygoers from all around the world submit their photos to share with everyone. A special thanks to the 2011 Team for using Posterous and allowing us to see how people from all over the world celebrated!
For those unfamiliar, what is Yuri's Night?
Yuri's Night is an annual global celebration commemorating the first flight of Yuri Gagarin, the first human in space. It's a time to look back on what we have achieved and look forward to what we can achieve.
What was the biggest Yuri's party from around the globe this year? Ever?
According to my data, the Frankfurt event was the largest, with an expected 10,000 people. In 2010, NASA Ames Research Center had over 12,000 attendees.
How many events were thrown this year?
567 events in 75 countries on 7 continents, including an event on the International Space Station (we also had several events in Second Life). In addition, we had 43 unconfirmed events.
How did you use Posterous to help share the events going on around the globe?
Yuri's Night wanted an easy way for people across the globe, regardless of what event they were at or when, to be able to share videos or photos of their Yuri's Night experience. Jeffrey Alles, a Posterous College Mobilizer and our Systems Administrator proposed that we use Posterous to make this happen in no time. Within a week we were set up and had verified our functionality and workflow, and pushed Yuri's Night Live, live.
Any recommendations on how someone can throw their own Yuri's Night event?
Yuri's Night Events are all about educating people on the wonders and benefits of human spaceflight (this year we were in contact with over 400 K-12 educators to help get Yuri's Night into the classroom). While we're big on education, Yuri's Night events can be as simple as a few friends having beers while watching Apollo 13, to events that take you half the year to organize with thousands of people! Grab a telescope and some friends, and just look up.
In closing, Yuri's Night is just like the space programs of the world, it isn't about the technology and the rocket science, it's about the people and the amazing things they can do.
Rock the planet.
