Introducing "How do I...", Our Weekly Series on How To Get the Most Out of Posterous

We're pleased to announce "How do I...", a new weekly series to help you get the most out of Posterous. It'll be part of the our recently revamped Posterous Help section, but contained on its own site.

In the inaugural post, we show you how to add Pages and Navigation to your Posterous site. This is very helpful if you're trying to build out your professional presence on the web, a portfolio, or add a contact page.

We plan to add a new post to it every week. Upcoming posts include how to get the most out of posting by email, how to use TypeKit to customize your site's fonts, and how to create a group site for your friends or family. If there's anything you think we should cover, let us know in the comments!

7 More Beautiful Themes: A Posterous Halloween Treat

Right on the tail of our last 7 themes, we are pleased to announce that Cory Watilo has given us 7 more wonderful themes.

This new set of themes is great for those wanting a bit more of a specialized look for their sites. Students and teachers wanting to create a scholarly look can choose Back To School, while those traveling abroad can try out the elegant Togo. There are also a few themes that showcase our new variable width site feature. Try out Mag or Showcase for a photo blog. These themes feature wider columns so your images take the center stage.

With these themes, you have even more choices when it comes to customizing the look of your sites. As always, we welcome your feedback about these new themes, as well as suggestions for new ones.

A Huge Step Forward for Theme Developers

At Posterous, we love our users, but we also love developers. We've been hard at work making improvements to our theme engine so that theme developers can create more beautiful themes and distribute them more easily. Today, we are announcing two enhancements to our theme engine.

Theme Installation Landing Page

One thing developers have asked of us is an easier way to distribute their themes to Posterous users. Before today, developers had to instruct users to copy and paste their theme code into the advanced theme customization area. This posed a problem for the less technically inclined users, and added needless friction to theme installation.

Today, developers can simply POST some form fields to Posterous. Once redirected to Posterous, users can directly install the theme onto any site they wish, without having to copy and paste anything.

We have made the documentation for the theme landing page available on our new API documentation site.

One theme developer had this to say about the new theme installation page:

Previously a customer of ours had to go through a process of copying the theme code they have purchased, logging into Posterous, and then pasting into the customize section. It was a slow and complicated process which could become frustrating and confusing for those who were not expecting it. Now, with a one click install, the barrier from purchase to usage is almost nothing. It is a huge benefit for micro theme developers and we are ecstatic to be able to offer this to our Posterous customers!

– Dave Perel, Co-Founder, Obox Design

Variable Theme Widths

This one has been requested by theme designers and users alike. Our themes were previously limited to 500 pixels wide. Today, this restriction is no more! You can now set your theme to be whatever width you'd like by adding the following <meta> tag to your theme's code:

<meta name="number:Theme width" content="700">

Once you have saved your theme with the new width parameter, we will re-scale all of your images and embedded videos to fit the new width.

With a wider theme, you can create a beautiful high-resolution photo blog, like this upcoming theme from Cory Watilo:

We simply can't wait to see what theme developers do with these new tools. As always, we welcome your feedback.

Posterous Releases Desktop TwitPic Downloader

We've just released a new desktop tool that downloads your photos from TwitPic so you can archive them on your hard drive or add to your Posterous site.   Just install Posterous I|O for TwitPic, follow a few simple steps and you'll regain control of your photos in no time at all.

Posterous provides a very cozy home for your photos - you can control the look and feel of your site, add static pages with links to your other sites and manage all your comments in one place.  Plus, you can use Posterous in exactly the same way you use TwitPic - from the web or from your favorite Twitter client.  And don't worry - our new tool will leave your photos on TwitPic intact.  Give Posterous I|O for TwitPic a try and let us know what you think.

Stay tuned to the Posterous Tech Blog for news on our open source version of Posterous I|O to support uploads to flickr or other destination sites.

Your sites just got a whole lot faster

We all hate having to wait for anything. Waiting in line at the café for that first coffee of the day can feel like a lifetime. Websites are no exception to this pain. If you are like us, you spend a lot of time on the 'net and your time is incredibly valuable. Because of this, we're proud to announce that all blog pages should see page load times decrease by over 50%!

We have accomplished this tremendous improvement by employing what is called a "reverse proxy" called Varnish. For those less technically inclined, a reverse proxy is a piece of software that maintains cached copies of web pages so that the load on our servers is reduced. Displaying these cached copies is orders of magnitude faster than hitting our servers.

Thanks to Varnish, you should be seeing noticeably faster load times on your blog pages.

Note: Varnish is currently not enabled for those of you on custom domains. We are planning to add this in the near future.

Thousands are posting by email every day.
